EXCLUSIVE: Cameras are rolling in Japan on Takashi Miike’s untitled Kyoto movie starring Charli xcx, Milly Alcock, Norman Reedus, Kiko Mizuhara and Show Kasamatsu.
Hailey Benton Gates, who recently starred with Charli xcx in A24’s The Moment and has the same studio’s Zendaya-Robert Pattinson pic The Drama out next week, has joined the cast in a key role.
Also joining the project are Live Nation Studios, the film and TV production division of ticketing giant Live Nation Entertainment. Live Nation Studios will serve as executive producer and contribute to the financing. Another new member of the project is Aidan Zamiri, who is joining as a producer. Zamiri most recently co-wrote and directed the aforementioned Sundance pic The Moment.
Set in Kyoto, the slasher horror follows three best friends who reunite and rekindle their lifelong friendship during what is intended to be a carefree girls trip. The getaway spirals into terror when Katie (Charli xcx) becomes possessed by a violent, tortured spirit (Mizuhara), unleashing a nightmare steeped in Japanese horror tradition.
The screenplay, inspired by an original idea from Charli xcx and Miike, was written by Ross Evans and Yumiko Aoyagi.
Xcx is producing through her studio365 banner. Misako Saka, Miike’s longtime producing partner, continues to produce on behalf of OLM, in conjunction with Live Nation Studios and Good World Productions. Executive producers include Michael Rapino and Kroft for Live Nation Studios, Youree Henley, Alex Peace-Power and Evans.
International sales were launched by The Veterans and CAA Media Finance at the European Film Market in Berlin.
