Over the past week, Xerri has found himself in the middle of headlines following reports that he was unhappy at the Bulldogs after being asked to switch from left to right centre.

Dropped to reserve-grade, which saw him score with his first touch of the football against the Raiders on Saturday, the centre has been linked with multiple rival teams

Although he is technically unable to speak to any other clubs due to still being under contract until the end of 2027, two of the clubs he has been closely linked to are the Melbourne Storm and Parramatta Eels.

However, The Sydney Morning Herald understands that he has not been discussed as a transfer target by Storm officials and they would prefer to sign a goal-kicking back.

Meanwhile, Eels coach Jason Ryles was blunt in his response when asked if the club had any interest in Xerri.

“No, not at all,” he said with authority.

BUNNIES STALL TALKS WITH PLAYMAKER

The arrival of Payne Haas could come at a hefty price, with the South Sydney Rabbitohs deciding to halt contract talks with a key member of their spine.

Playing 18 matches with the club last season after arriving from the Manly Sea Eagles, Jamie Humphreys was able to cement the halfback spot ahead of Jayden Sullivan and the now departed Lewis Dodd.

Humphreys’ great form saw him and his management locked in advanced discussions with the club over a one-year extension until the end of 2027.

However, Code Sports reports that the Rabbitohs have now decided to stall those contract talks as they attempt to fit everyone under their salary cap.

It is understood that if a deal is not struck between the two parties, the Perth Bears are expected to show a keen interest in his services due to his ability to play in the halves or at hooker.

As it stands, they have recruited Toby Sexton and Tyran Wishart to play in the halves but the arrival of Humphreys could see the latter make the switch to dummy-half.

Meanwhile, the Rabbitohs also have Ashton Ward and Jonah Glover on their books as potential replacements, while rookie Matthew Humphries is seen as the club’s long-term halfback.

WARRIORS ‘ON THE VERGE’ OF PLAYER SWAP

The Warriors are reportedly “on the verge” of securing a replacement player from the Broncos as part of Brisbane’s deal to sign Origin forward Mitch Barnett.

Barnett was granted a release earlier in the month on compassionate grounds, with the front rower to depart the club for Red Hill at the end of the year.

Warriors CEO Cameron George was adamant at the time that Barnett’s impending release was announced that the club wanted adequate compensation in return, likely in the form of a player.

It appears the Warriors have landed on that player, with Code Sports’ David Riccio reporting on Triple M that Andrew Webster’s side is close to securing a swap deal for Grant Anderson.

“This is in the stages of negotiations as far as what the deal looks like and how much money but I’m also certain this will eventuate and Grant Anderson will end up at the Warriors,” Riccio reported.

It means Anderson will join Storm flyer Will Warbrick in joining the Warriors, which leaves the futures of Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck up in the air. Both are off-contract at the end of the year.

Riccio said the Warriors want to get a deal done with Anderson for next year before turning their attention to whether an immediate swap could be in the works.

Anderson got his first run for the Broncos this week after grand final hero Gehamat Shibasaki was dropped.

“They want to get the deal done for next year first and then work out is it a possibility to go straight away.”

COWBOYS SET TO WIN RACE FOR YOUNG GUN

The Cowboys are reportedly set to ward off rival clubs in the race for Jaxon Purdue by locking up the young gun on a $3 million mega deal.

The Daily Telegraph reported Purdue and his management have kicked off extension talks with the Cowboys, who are confident they can secure him with a $3 million extension.

Purdue is off-contract in 2026 and has been free to negotiate with rivals from November 1 last year, with the Storm, Bulldogs and Bears interested in his services, with Mal Meninga a big fan of the youngster.

The 20-year-old has scored 17 tries in 34 games since his debut in 2024 and has starred at centre, while also showing his versatility in spending time at five-eighth and fullback.

His performances have sparked plenty of interest in rival clubs, but the Cowboys are confident he is going nowhere and are aiming to re-sign him on a four-year deal worth $3 million until the end of 2030.

Purdue and the Cowboys are currently at odds over finances, but if they can agree on a value, the classy utility back is keen to stay at the club long-term instead of going on the open market.

Purdue’s proposed deal is worth a reported $750,000 a season and the Cowboys are privately confident the versatile star will stay loyal.

Purdue’s manager Sam Ayoub revealed his client’s preference is to stay at the Cowboys.

“Yes, we’ve had some talks with the Cowboys,” Ayoub said told The Daily Telegraph.

”A lot of pressure for good reason” | 02:38

“I spoke with Jaxon and he’s very happy at the Cowboys.

“My priority is always to work with a player to stay at his incumbent club.

“If it’s not feasible or practical then you have to look at the other options.

“There’s no doubting there would be other available (clubs) for Jaxon, but there is no intent to go down that path if we can arrive at a fair and proper deal for the player at his incumbent club.”
