One resident told the Herald she was in the middle of her evening prayer when she heard a “huge boom” from outside.
“I was sitting next to the window in the kitchen and the sound shocked me. I opened my eyes and looked outside, only to see flames shooting up to the sky and black smoke,” she said.
“My neighbour ran over to check if I was okay and she said she was about to call the fire service.”
Fire and Emergency New Zealand told the Herald that three trucks and one support vehicle were called to the scene.
“Upon arrival, we found a car, a carport and a large van on fire.
“The fire has since been extinguished and a fire investigator is on scene.”
