NEED TO KNOW
Anne Hathaway looked back on how she handled her viral fall on the set of The Devil Wears Prada 2 in a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar
The actress recalled immediately acting okay after the tumble, but knew she would become “news” the instant it happened
Hathaway’s wardrobe malfunction happened in August and was caused by the heel of her shoe breaking off
Anne Hathaway has not forgotten this one memory while filming the Devil Wears Prada sequel.
Back in August, the 43-year-old actress, who is reprising her role as Andy Sachs alongside Meryl Steep and Emily Blunt in the movie, took quite the fall down some stairs after the heel of one of her shoes broke off.
The moment was videoed and photographed and blasted on social media for all to see, which Hathaway said she was very much “aware” of.
“I was aware that I was falling, I was aware that I was being photographed, and I was also aware that, like, so many people on the crew, their hearts had just jumped up into their throat, so I needed to get up quickly to make sure they knew I was okay,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in a new interview published on Wednesday, March 25.
As seen in clips, including one reshared on Instagram by Hathaway herself, she bounced back effortlessly, turning the faux pas into a sort of “ta-da” moment. But behind the scenes, she remembered telling director David Frankel, “Oh no. I’m news.”

The entire movie had become news with paparazzi and fans following the cast and crew’s every move in New York City. It became so big that Streep (who plays Miranda Priestly) told Harper’s Bazaar that “none of us were prepared for the ambush of both goodwill and avid attention that engulfed us.”
“We needed police barriers and crowd control. Buses of fans turned up, and paparazzi swarmed and in one case kept jumping in front of the camera and the shot and got in a kerfuffle with crew! Annie kept her cool, but I was unnerved.”
News of the sequel was confirmed in July 2024, and filming began on June 30, 2025. An official trailer for the movie — which comes 20 years after the original’s 2006 release date —premiered in February 2026 and offered a longer peek at Andy’s return to “Runway.”

Ahead of TDWP’s premiere on May 1 (just days before the 2026 Met Gala on May 4), there will no doubt be lots to celebrate with a stylish press tour, which we got a glimpse of at the Oscars with Hathaway in a very on-theme floral Valentino gown. She is also encouraging fans to embrace method dressing, too.
“I’m hoping everybody dresses up and goes to the movies,” she told Vogue in an interview published Sunday, Feb. 1. “I hope people remember how much fun they had wearing hot pink and going to see Barbie. I’m hoping that everybody puts on their favorite Miranda Priestly-approved outfit and just has a blast.”
