Adams Ave in Mount Maunganui will be temporarily closed to vehicles from 5pm today, as heavy rain is forecast to affect the region.
The closure follows geotechnical advice warning of increased risks on Mauao due to the expected rainfall, the Tauranga City Council said in a statement today.
As a precaution, the council will restrict vehicle access along the stretch of Adams Ave between Pilot Bay and the Maunganui Rd roundabout.
While the road will be closed to traffic, the footpath on the shop-side of Adams Avenue will remain open for pedestrians.
The council advises motorists and locals to expect some disruption as crews set up the road closure this afternoon.
It said the decision was a “precautionary approach” to ensure public safety, with further updates expected as MetService provides more detailed weather information.
“The road closure is temporary, and we will reopen Adams Avenue as soon as we have assurance from geotechnical specialists that the risk has reduced”, once the rain is over.
