Employees at a business in Eyemouth, Scotland, were shocked and concerned when a baby seal showed up right outside their door. There was a storm going on, and the young pup clearly needed a place to wait it out.

The business contacted British Divers Marine Life Rescue, who came out to monitor the situation and make sure the seal was kept safe during his time on land. As they watched him to make sure he didn’t wander into traffic, they also noticed a crowd of curious onlookers had gathered. Wanting to make sure the seal wasn’t disturbed, the team made a judgment call.

“Barriers were put in place to prevent members of the public trying to access the seal and allow the seal to rest, also blocking it from going further up the pavement and getting on the road,” Em Mayman with British Divers Marine Life Rescue told The Dodo. “The sign on the barrier advised the public the seal was resting.”

The sign on the barrier said, “I’m sleeping. I’m fine, just tired. Please leave me alone.” The seal now had a safe place to rest until the storm passed. The team was pleased — the seal, however, was not.

A few hours after the barrier was put in place, the cheeky seal made a judgment call of his own. He decided he didn’t need protection and moved himself outside the barrier.

“When medics returned to check on him, he had relocated himself neatly to the other side — and gone straight back to sleep, as if nothing had happened,” the rescue wrote on Facebook. “At one point, with his head on the sandbag!”

The team couldn’t help but laugh when they saw what the seal had done. He had made it very clear that he was in charge, not them.

“Because, as always … the seal makes the rules,” the rescue wrote.

After six hours, the seal finally decided he’d had enough rest and found his way back to the beach. Everyone was glad to see he was OK and that they could help — even if, in his mind, he didn’t really need it.
