Traffic delays are being reported on State Highway 2, near Bethlehem.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Garreth Lewis said crews were called to a “well-involved” car fire on State Highway 2 near Bethlehem at 12.52pm.

Lewis said it was not the result of a crash and only one vehicle was involved.

One fire truck from Tauranga Central Station attended and the fire has since been extinguished.

Crews remain at the scene assisting police.

Google’s live traffic reporting shows traffic is backed up in both lanes of the highway.

Emergency services are at the scene.

NZTA said due to a car fire, the eastbound lane on the Wairoa Bridge is blocked. Pass with care and expect delays.

A police spokesperson said they were called to assist Fire and Emergency New Zealand with traffic control.
