A person has died and powerlines are down after a car hit a power pole near Foxton.

Emergency services were alerted to a serious crash on Foxton Shannon Rd between Himatangi Block and Poplar South Roads just before 4pm.

One person has died, prompting an inquiry into the circumstances of
the accident.

The road has been closed and delays for motorists are expected to continue as police conduct a scene examination.

The power company has been alerted to downed powerlines in the area.
