We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.

House of Guinness (Netflix, 25 September)

From the creator of Peaky Blinders and screenwriter of the upcoming James Bond film comes House of Guinness, an epic historical drama inspired by one of Europe’s most enduring dynasties. It’s 1868, and trouble is brewing in Dublin. The Guinness family patriarch is dead, setting in motion a Succession-esque power struggle as his four heirs wage war over the future over the ancestral enterprise. Starring Anthony Boyle, Louis Partridge, Fionn O’Shea and Emily Fairn, this looks to be a salacious saga of power, politics, and pints.

The Lowdown (Disney+, 24 September)

Sterlin Harjo’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed Reservation Dogs sees Ethan Hawke playing a worse for wear, self-proclaimed “truthstorian” and owner of Hoot Owl Books. Inspired by the citizen journalist who exposed Tulsa founder W. Tate Brady’s ties to the Ku Klux Klan, he digs dangerously deep, unearthing a web of secrets that lead him to the city’s dark underbelly and its corrupt corridors of power. Billed as “a crowd-pleaser and weirdo’s delight all at once,” The Lowdown is sure to be a head-turning hoot.

One of them Days (Neon, 23 September)

In the buddy comedy One of Them Days, Keke Palmer and SZA are best friends and roommates living in a shabby Los Angeles apartment. When the first of the month rolls around, the two unexpectedly find themselves facing eviction as SZA’s good-for-nothing partner has run off with their rent. The chaotic companions have until the end of the day to raise the money, forcing the raucous duo to embark on a by-any-means-necessary search for cash. Effortlessly mixing “the silly with the sincere,” this feel-good film is one to seek out if you’re having one of them days.

The Savant (Apple TV+, 26 September)

Adapted from the 2019 Cosmopolitan article ‘Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?’ by Andrea Stanley, this timely thriller sees Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain star as the titular savant. A devoted mum by day and virtuosic undercover investigator by night, she infiltrates online hate groups to thwart domestic extremists before they can carry out their large-scale attacks. Shedding light on the darkest corners of the internet, The Savant won’t be an easy watch, but it’ll be an engrossing one.

All of You (Apple TV+, 26 September)

Best known as the gruff Roy Kent in Ted Lasso, Brett Goldstein changes pace in All of You, a sci-fi romance set in a near future where a test can scientifically calculate a person’s soulmate. Co-written with Black Mirror’s William Bridges, the film follows Simon (Goldstein) and Laura (Imogen Poots), long-time best friends who harbour feelings for each other. Despite the results of the test and Laura settling down with her “perfect” partner, the two lovers spend the next decade wrestling with the feeling that there’s more to a soulmate than science. It’s been called a “weepie of the highest order” so make sure there’s tissues on hand.

Pick of the Flicks: Mantis (Netflix, 26 September)

With shades of John Wick, this South Korean action thriller film stars Squid Games Yim Si-wan as Mantis, an elite assassin who comes back from a long hiatus to find the secret world of contract killers in chaos. The old ways are in ruin, forcing the sickle-armed Si-wan to team-up with his rival (and fellow Squid Game actor) Park Gyu-young in a series of bloody showdowns with a new generation of cut-throat killers. They’re all competing to be the underworld’s number one assassin, but who will emerge unscathed as the ruthless ruler of this shadowy world?
