Police are investigating the “sudden death” of a person on a flight from the US to Auckland overnight.

The flight had arrived in Auckland from New York, a police media spokesperson told 1News.

“Police are making enquiries into the woman’s death on behalf of the coroner.”

In a statement, Qantas confirmed to Stuff a person had died during the nearly 18-hour flight.

“Urgent assistance was provided by crew and doctors onboard but sadly they passed away,” a Qantas spokesperson said.

“In line with standard procedure, emergency services met the aircraft as part of the response.”

Auckland Airport and St John have been contacted by 1News for comment.
