Available in full today, April 24, is Your Favorite Toy — the new studio album from the Foo Fighters.
Previewed by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band over the past few months, the record is a collection of 10 songs rife with energy from Dave Grohl & company, with a bit of a battered-and-bruised feel reflecting the path that led them here.

2023’s But Here We Are was a record of resilience, a cathartic and emotional response to the tragic 2022 passing of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins at just 50 years of age (and Grohl’s mother Virginia, who also has a dedication in the album liner notes).
Throughout its songs, it was evident Grohl was still working through his emotions regarding the loss of Hawkins — a band mate, sure, but also (and more importantly), one of his close, personal friends.

Grohl is once again working through emotions on Your Favorite Toy — but this time, it’s a more revved-up and resolute Grohl. These songs are a visceral snapshot of where the group is in 2026 as one of the few remaining examples of the veteran “rock band” still out there doing its thing, just a bit more battered and bruised than usual.
But this is a different Foo Fighters than even the band that released But Here We Are three short years ago.
Outside of Hawkins’ tenure with the band, the phrase “longtime drummer” hasn’t usually been uttered much in relation to Foo Fighters over the years, Grohl either manning the kit himself or choosing someone else to pick up the sticks.
The time between records saw Josh Freese join the ranks so the Foo Fighters could return to the road — only to be unceremoniously exited from the group (which both he and Grohl have discussed in frank and honest recent interviews that shed some light on the complicated inner workings of a band of this stature).
Your Favorite Toy marks the studio debut of Ilan Rubin with Foo Fighters, and he more than capably powers through the album’s songs like a man on a mission — which he is, really, given the band’s history with drummers. Rubin, 37, is also a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, having been inducted in 2020 as a member of Nine Inch Nails. He’s also the youngest musician inducted by the Hall (he was 32 at the time).

It’s all of this recent context, coupled with the news of Grohl fathering a child outside of his marriage in 2024, that seems to have fueled an energy and lit a fire inside him and his band mates Chris Shiflett (guitar), Pat Smear (guitar), Nate Mendel (bass) and Rami Jaffee (percussion/keys).
