While Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be this year’s biggest movie, the Marvel Cinematic Universe also has Spider-Man: Brand New Day swinging into theaters five months before that epic team-up outing. Led by director Destin Daniel Cretton after Jon Watts directed the first three films, Brand New Day will put Peter Parker into his most unique MCU story yet, as the world is now unaware of Spider-Man’s identity and Peter Parker’s existence. He will also be tasked with fighting multiple powerful villains in his return to a more street-level story, including Michael Mando’s long-awaited return as Mac Gargan/Scorpion.
While this movie is sure to be an epic adventure, it will be told with a much different scale than its predecessor, after 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home introduced the multiverse for the first time in the MCU. This will allow Spider-Man 4 to focus on Peter Parker’s evolution as a hero, showing him on his own and struggling as he tries to rebuild his life from the ground up. Now, as the film gets set to swing into theaters this summer, its director is shedding new light on what to expect from this world-famous young protagonist.
At Deadline’s Contenders Television event, director Destin Daniel Cretton shared new information on his next movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Celebrating the response he has seen for the movie in test screenings, he explained that the sequel has “all the heart and humor that you want” from an MCU Spider-Man film. He also noted that, at its core, the movie is “about relearning how to connect with people” before expressing his excitement for the audience to see it:
“There’s this dude named Peter Parker, and he got bit by a spider, and he’s got spider powers…I can’t say what happens, but I’m very, very excited about the movie. I’m really excited with the small test screenings and how it’s connected with an audience. Of course, it’s a big blockbuster, super fun, it’s got all the heart and humor that you want from a Spider-Man movie, but at its core, it’s a movie about relearning how to connect with people, and I’m really excited to put it out in the world right now.”

These comments come as no surprise after No Way Home shocked the world with Peter’s decision to have Doctor Strange cast a spell to make the world forget he exists. This spell is already confirmed to play a major role in Brand New Day, as the first trailer teased the letter Peter wrote to Michelle Jones-Watson, reintroducing himself and trying to reconnect with her. This will also come as MJ gets into a new relationship with Eman Esfandi’s undisclosed character, throwing even more drama into the fold as Peter tries to rebuild his life.
As of this writing, there are no indications that Peter will find his way back into MJ and Ned Leeds’ lives by the end of the movie, or how big the latter two characters’ roles will be. However, with the world unaware that Peter exists, he will have a clean slate he can use to figure out where he wants to go with his life, while continuing to protect those he cares about (even if they are unaware of him doing it).
