ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WSBT) — Staff at the St. Joseph County Jail along with the St. Joseph County and State Health Departments are looking into the cause of a salmonella outbreak that made several inmates sick last week.
Officials say the jail’s medical staff treated 23 inmates who had similar food poisoning symptoms last Wednesday.
The County and State Health Departments were called for an inspection.
Tests were taken by the health department, however the results have not come back at this time.
Officials say the jail kitchen passed a health inspection just five days before the outbreak, with only two minor non-critical violations.
Those violations were for standing water on the floor and mold on wire racks in a walk in cooler.
There is currently no word on what caused the outbreak, pending test results.
Jail staff say most of the inmates have fully recovered.
