Though the Met Gala’s star-studded guest list is most heavily slanted toward Hollywood celebrities (and increasingly some Silicon Valley tycoons), the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is no stranger to the likes of British royals and aristocrats. Lady Emma Thynn, Marchioness of Bath, made her Met Gala debut on Monday, looking positively regal in a structured floral ballgown with diamond drop earrings and a statement necklace.

Lady Emma is already a fashion icon across the pond thanks to brand ambassadorships with Chopard and Fiorucci and having served as a fashion editor for British Vogue. The Marchioness of Bath has now gained legions of fans on this side of the Atlantic as of late after joining the cast of Bravo’s reboot of the reality series, Ladies of London. (Although Lady Emma is no stranger to the small screen, having already appeared on Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Masterchef in the UK.)
The Marchioness has been in New York City over the last week to promote the show’s season final, appearing with co-star Lady Martha Sitwell on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen as well as attending The King’s Trust reception and gala at Christie’s last week while King Charles and Queen Camilla were on a state visit to the United States. Lady Emma was also spotted stepping out with Venus and Serena Williams in Manhattan over the weekend for Colman Domingo’s pre-Met Gala party. She also walked the Met Gala arrivals carpet with Serena on Monday night as well.

Born in London to an interior designer and a Nigerian oil billionaire, Lady Emma made history in 2020 as Britain’s first Black marchioness. After marrying Ceawlin Thynn, now the eighth Marquess of Bath, she was previously styled as the Viscountess Weymouth from 2013 to 2020 until her father-in-law’s death. The couple have two sons: John, 11, and Henry, 9. She has since become the chatelaine, the French term for the keeper of the castle, of Longleat, the storied Elizabethan-style estate and safari park in Wiltshire, England that has operated since 1966 and holds the distinction of being the first safari park to open outside of Africa.

Originally constructed as a Augustinian priory before becoming the seat of the Marquesses of Bath in the 16th century, Longleat was also featured in an episode of Ladies of London: The New Reign. “I’m always rushing around, lugging boxes hither and thither, and if people recognize me, they often give me feedback,” Lady Emma told Harper’s Bazaar UK in 2023 about running the property, adding what an “amazing joy” it has been for her. “I never get used to it; it’s not like it wears off. But Longleat doesn’t feel like it’s mine—it feels like it belongs to everyone.”
