Good Karma Brands stations received awards in two Station of the Year categories and one Best Radio Show category at this year’s Wisconsin Broadcasters Association awards ceremony, held May 2. Three stations owned by Civic Media also received awards for Best Radio Show.
WBA’s awards, chosen from more than 1,300 entries from 108 participating stations and judged by professional broadcasters outside Wisconsin, went to Good Karma Brands’ WTMJ-AM (620) Milwaukee and WBEV-FM (95.3) Beaver Dam, for Large and Small Market News and Talk Station of the Year, respectively. The company’s “ESPN Madison” WTLX (100.5) Madison afternoon team of Jim Rutledge, Olympic gold medalist Matt Hamilton and Molly Brown took first place in Best Large Market Radio Show, News and Talk.
Civic Media WAUK (540 and translator W262CJ 100.3) Milwaukee’s “WAUK All News, All Morning” won first place in Best Large Market Morning Radio Show, News and Talk, while its WGBW (1590 and translator W250CV 97.5) Green Bay’s “NEWisco Weekend — Pride” came in first for Best Medium Market Radio Show, News and Talk. In the Music station categories, Civic Media oldies WRJN (1400) Racine’s “The Don Rosen Morning Show” took first for Best Medium Market Morning Radio Show.
Other awards in News and Talk programming went to Seehafer Broadcasting WOMT-AM/FM (1240/98.9) Manitowoc for Medium Market Station of the Year; Midwest Communications WTAQ-AM/FM (1360 /97.5) Green Bay’s “The Morning News” with Matt Z. and Rob Sussman, Best Medium Market Morning Radio Show, first place; and AMC Partners WHYB (103.7) Menominee for Best Small Market Radio Show, first place for “The Shoreline Shopping Show” and Best Small Market Radio Show, first place for “Swap Shop.”
In the music category, Station of the Year awards went to Sun Prairie Community Foundation variety WLSP-LP (103.5) Sun Prairie and City of Monona Americana-formatted WVMO-LP (98.7) Monona, tying for the Large Market award, while Woodward Communications CHR WKSZ “95.9 Kiss FM” Green Bay and CTJ Communications hot AC “The Lake” WLKG (96.1) Lake Geneva won for Medium and Small Market.
First-place winners for Music’s Best Radio Show were Saga Communications rock “102.9 The Hog” WHQG Milwaukee midday host Mindy Novotny for Large Market, WKSZ’s “Afternoons with Reed and Eddie” for Medium, and WLKG’s “Middays with Andi” for Small. The first-place award for Best Morning Music Radio Show, Large Market went to WVMO-LP’s weekend show “This Week in Music History,” while the Small Market award was given to WLKG’s weekender “LifeMatters with Tom & Nancy.”
