The southbound lanes of State Highway 2 along the Hutt Road between Petone and Ngauranga have been blocked after a pedestrian was struck by a car.
SH2 was closed on Friday night between Dowse interchange and Hutt off-ramp, with a detour via State Highways 58 and 1.
Police said they were alerted to the incident at 6.25pm.
They are advising people to delay their journey or use State Highways 58 and 1.
The Serious Crash Unit is attending the scene and could take several hours to complete their investigation.
Traffic build-up was already significant and police were advising motorists there would be “extensive delays”.
