In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Eric Kripke shares a heartbreaking update regarding the series finale of The Boys after the shock cancellation of the popular spinoff, Gen V. Kripke admits he’s “bummed” regarding Gen V’s end and states for the record that he’s “not the one who cancelled the show,” and admits “I fought really hard to stop it from being cancelled.” The showrunner shares how he planned to continue the Godolkin kids’ stories after The Boys ended.
“I’m hopeful that’s not the last time you see them, because we don’t end their storyline in ‘The Boys,’ Like, that’s all done, and they head off to have more adventures. Those characters still have things to work on, and that was very intentional. We still want the opportunity to be able to do that.
There’s more story that we want to tell. Sometimes these things just don’t go your way, but all the other producers and I really fought hard to try to keep it going. Alas, you know, it didn’t work out, but one of the advantages of having a world like this is that we will be able to find opportunities to continue their story. Some of the ‘Gen V’ gang show up for the last couple of episodes of ‘The Boys,’ with further stories on the horizon. We’re starting to kick around ideas and see how can we bring back those characters.”
Marie Moreau (played by Jaz Sinclair) and her story were expected to be major plot points in The Boys, especially towards the series finale, as her powers have been hinted at as some of the strongest in the franchise. After the Gen V cancellation news went global, fans were expecting a major face-off between Marie and the series’ main antagonist, Homelander (played by Antony Starr). However, with Kripke’s comments stating that their story isn’t over could signal a far greater problem for the entire final episode.
When Kripke was questioned about Marie and why she didn’t face off against Homelander, the showrunner stated that:
“She has all of this power, and everyone online is like, ‘Well, why doesn’t she just go take on Homelander?’ I’m like, ‘She’s a 19-year-old kid! She has no idea how to wield any of it in any sort of responsible, controlled way.’ Were there to be another season of ‘Gen V,’ that would be her training-with-Yoda season, where she really learns how to take the next step.
The fact that she’s super powerful, which she is, does not mean she’s automatically ready for every single conflict, much less one as big as Homelander. It could be quite dangerous and destructive, and it could lead to a lot of collateral damage and casualties if she can’t control it, so she still has a long road to go. That’s what we tried to plant there.”
Many fan theories are now being thrown away due to Kripke’s latest comments, and the Gen V cast have had to say goodbye to their characters following news of the series’ cancellation despite Kripke’s best efforts to keep it alive.
Sinclair shared a touching tribute to her time as Marie in an emotional Instagram post while also honoring her late co-star Chance Perdomo by stating, “I am truly honored to have gotten to be your Marie. She is fierce and flawed and powerful as hell. And as a woman, particularly a woman of color it brings me so much pride to have gotten to embody such a multifaceted and badass character,” before ending the caption with “For Chance.”
For now, Prime Video remains steadfast in its decision to cancel Gen V after two seasons, and according to Kripke, there will be no closure in The Boys series finale.
