The driver allegedly reached nearly 200km/h after failing to stop for police.

A Papakura man has been charged after he allegedly fled police in a stolen car, going almost double the speed limit as helicopters tracked him overhead.

Police tried to stop the BMW at 11.15pm after noticing the vehicle was flagged as stolen, but the driver allegedly ignored police signals and
continued travelling away from East St.

Counties Manukau South Area response manager, Senior Sergeant Clive Wood, said police called in the Eagle to assist instead of giving chase in road vehicles.

“They have been able to provide commentary overhead as the vehicle entered the Southern Motorway, reaching almost double the posted speed limit.“

After the car was spiked just after the Princes St off-ramp in Ōtāhuhu, the 40-year-old man allegedly tried to continue towards Takanini.
