The trust said its Māori-led collective impact model brings together technical mapping, policy development, local wānanga, practical on-the-ground projects and strategic advocacy into one co-ordinated system to support the future of sheep and beef farming in the region.
Chief executive Hilton Collier, who was appointed last year, said the award was recognition of the collective effort happening across Te Tairāwhiti.
“This award belongs to our people, our whānau and the many hands across the region who have committed themselves to the future of our whenua and communities,” he said.
“Tairāwhiti Whenua members are working together to achieve higher value from our best lands while we work to protect our erosion-prone hill country.
“The work happening across our membership and wider community is critical to helping landowners navigate change, strengthen resilience and create long-term opportunities for future generations.”
B+LNZ judges described Tairāwhiti Whenua as “an impressive example of collaboration and leadership delivering multiple tangible results for rural communities”.
They said the organisation “demonstrated innovation at a grand scale” and “generated fantastic economic, environmental and social benefits”.
Collier said the recognition reflected the strength of collective action and kaupapa Māori leadership.
“This is not just about farming innovation. It’s about people, whānau and communities coming together to protect what matters most while building a stronger future for the next generation,” Collier said.
