Scrubs is coming back way sooner than anyone expected, but that’s not necessarily good news. Although an exact premiere date hasn’t yet been announced, ABC has confirmed that the second run of Scrubs revival episodes will arrive in fall 2026. With Season 1 only just airing its finale in May, that means it’ll be a matter of months before the sitcom returns. On the surface, this is all super exciting for Scrubs fans, but the rapid turnaround comes with an unfortunate side effect that’s easy to forget about. Scrubs originally ran for nine seasons between 2001 and 2010, although Season 9 is no longer canon.
When the revival was announced in 2025, ABC played it safe by only ordering a single run of nine episodes. New showrunner Aseem Batra and company clearly had more stories to tell than they were capable of fitting into such a truncated run, but they made it work. The quality of the revival and the authentic replication of the original show’s vibe led to a speedy renewal in the wake of Season 1’s finale. It’s not yet been fully confirmed how long Scrubs is back for, but the show’s leading man and its creator have weighed in. Their plan sounds promising, but the show’s turnaround time is also concerning, if viewed in a certain way.
Zach Braff & Bill Lawrence Have Stated They Want the ‘Scrubs’ Revival To Last for 5 Seasons

While Scrubs Season 9 saw Zach Braff steadily head for the exit as JD was phased out, the revival restored the actor to a central role. He also directed the show’s first episode in 16 years, and is now an executive producer. Creator and former showrunner Bill Lawrence is involved with the revival, although he has adopted a slightly less hands-on approach due to his huge workload with other projects. As reported by ScreenRant, the duo recently had a semi-playful interaction in answer to a question about how long the Scrubs revival would last. The query was aimed at Lawrence, but he redirected it to Braff.
“Zach, how many seasons of the show do you want to do?” Lawrence asked. “I think five’s a great number,” replied Braff. “Everybody should be happy with five.” Lawrence ended with, “There you go.” There wasn’t any resistance to Braff’s plan from Lawrence, so I remain hopeful that at least five seasons is the idea. As long as Scrubs is still raking in the viewers, I don’t see ABC pushing back on this roadmap. Revivals can often be much shorter than five seasons, and they don’t always get to end on their own terms. Scrubs seems to be sidestepping both fates, which would be amazing. Still, after 16 Scrubs-less years, the revival could still be over before we even know it.
‘Scrubs’ Is On Pace To Fulfill Its 5-Season Roadmap by 2028

Yes, you read that correctly. Let’s break it down. Scrubs Season 1 ended in May 2026, and I know from conversations with the cast that the latter episodes were still being written and shot while the earlier episodes were being aired. Even just this proves that Scrubs requires very little production time. This is reinforced even further by the fact that Season 2 has only just been greenlit, but it’ll be airing in a matter of months. Assuming that this renewal pattern continues, and that we also get two seasons of Scrubs in 2027, then the fifth could drop as early as 2028.
Being kept in a near-constant supply of Scrubs episodes is obviously great, but it also means that the sitcom’s revival era could be over in as little as two years. While I’m elated to have any new Scrubs at all, it’s somewhat bittersweet to think of such a comparatively brief comeback. Of course, a big part of this comes down to the fact that Scrubs seasons used to routinely consist of 20+ episodes, whereas they’re now basically half as long. Five old-style Scrubs seasons would mean half a decade of new episodes, but the modern framework for how runs are packaged now means a far more streamlined return for the sitcom is on the cards.
