On Friday, an X user put up a graphic comparing streaming numbers for recent music releases. The post listed “The Life Of A Showgirl + MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING — 4.005M” against “ICEMAN + MAID OF HONOUR + HABIBTI — 683k.”
The first line combined the streaming figures for Swift’s latest album and Lizzo’s 2025 mixtape, totaling 4.005 million. The second grouped three Drake singles together, a combination that reached only 683,000 streams by comparison.
The post also featured a clip from Lizzo’s STFU music video, though the Truth Hurts singer did not share it herself. Lizzo reshared the graphic and asked, “Can someone explain what this means?” One user supplied an answer that turned the post into a controversy, writing, “it means all that s–t talking you did about Tay finally caught up to you.”

Lizzo replied directly and did not hold back. “Are you well? First of all I have never talked s–t about Taylor Swift, also while we on the subject I’ve never talked s–t about any artist. Just because I mention an artist by name does not mean I’m talking s–t— grow tf up pls.”

The accusation landed poorly, given the context. One week earlier, on the May 15 episode of Genius Verified, Lizzo had spoken warmly about Swift while promoting her new song BITCH. She revealed that the track interpolates Meredith Brooks’ 1997 hit of the same name and made clear she wanted credit to go where it was due.
“Shout-out to Meredith Brooks. I want the whole world to know that this is her record.” She then explained her own decision to flag the creative lineage publicly, saying, “I feel like that would’ve gotten lost in translation a little bit. I was like, ‘This is Lizzo’s version.'”
The reference to Swift followed naturally. “You know how it’s like, ‘Taylor’s Version?’ It’s like, ‘Bitch (Lizzo’s Version).'”

Lizzo’s admiration for Swift goes back well before the 2026 exchange. In a 2022 appearance on The Breakfast Club radio show, the Grammy-winning rapper drew a direct parallel between herself and Swift, rooting it in their shared approach to songwriting. “I’m Black Taylor Swift. I really am, I’m trifling.”
She went on to describe how she writes about former partners without reducing them to villains. “I don’t talk too badly about [an ex’s] character, it’s just what he do. I’ll be like, ‘He’s a good person, but this is what he did.
