Hollywood star Adam Sandler has been slammed for “embarrassing” his wife during a red carpet appearance for Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix movie.
Sandler attended the world premiere of Netflix’s new film Office Romance held at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, where he was joined by his wife, Jackie Sandler who has a supporting role in the film.
While Jackie looked glamorous in a chic black mini dress and high heels, Sandler appeared in a strikingly casual outfit that made it seem like he had attended a completely different event.
The Hollywood actor wore a bright orange New York Knicks hoodie, blue tracksuit pants and green trainers with purple laces, looking more like he had popped out for a pint of milk or to walk the dog.
Backlash on social media was swift, with many criticising the star for not making an effort and “embarrassing” his wife.
“Can’t he at least wear a shirt and pants for his wife’s event?” commented one.
“It’s so thoughtless and embarrassing,” said another, while a third wrote: “It’s like a six-year-old throwing a tantrum about not wanting to wear a suit.”
A fourth added: “This is so embarrassing for his wife.”
However, others jumped to his defence, with one remarking: “For Adam Sandler, this is as formal as a suit! His comfortable style should be respected.”
Sandler, who was spotted at a burger joint back in January, has previously commented on his wife’s opinion of his style, saying that she’s the first to jump to his defence.
He told Variety: “My wife has always been lenient about my clothes. When people around us would say, ‘Your wife dresses so nicely, why don’t you dress better?’ she would always defend me, saying, ‘He’s comfortable like this. Just leave him be.’”
Last year, Sandler opened up about his dislike for formal wear, telling Entertainment Tonight that he was unhappy with being forced to wear suits during the press tour for Jay Kelly:
“It’s been horrendous,” he joked. “I don’t like the feeling. I think I only have three different suits and one of them I don’t even like. I can’t stand the pants, I can’t stand the jackets, the stupid shirts — hate them all,” he said at the time.
