Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the outbreak has been contained to the Dutch cruise.
“They’ve only been tested again in the last 24 or 36 hours or so and all six have again tested negative,” Butler said.
“It would be appropriate for that quarantine arrangement to remain in place for the rest of the 42-day incubation period to June 23.”
There are now 13 total cases of hantavirus, three of whom have since died.
“But the cases overseas and the advice, not just of our public health officials, but of the World Health Organisation, indicate the risk of testing positive some time into the future during that 42-day incubation period has [not] completely passed.”
Earlier this month, Butler said the six passengers quarantining in Australia, including the Kiwi, were in “good health” and “relatively good spirits”.
University of Otago professor of public health Michael Baker previously told the Herald that hantaviruses are a family of viruses spread to humans through rodents that can lead to serious illness and death.
People become infected with hantavirus by inhaling dust that contains rat droppings and urine.
Hantaviruses can cause the disorders haemorrhagic fever and respiratory syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS).
