If you’re sick of hearing about Sydney Sweeney’s jeans, you’re not alone. Apparently, the actress has zero interest in discussing her American Eagle ad, which kicked up some truly inspired discourse last month about eugenics, dwindling DEI hires, and whether or not Sweeney is a guns-blazing Republican. Sweeney has deftly managed to avoid weighing in on the controversy and recently made it extra clear that she will not be talking about denim any further.
In an interview with Vanity Fair Thursday, Sweeney promoted her upcoming film Christy, a biopic about International Boxing Hall of Famer Christy Martin that will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival Friday. But when asked if American Eagle might make an appearance in her Christy press, she said, “I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I’m not there to talk about jeans.”
“The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about,” she added.
Well, that’s that. But if you do have any follow-up questions about Denim-gate, you can direct them to pretty much any American Eagle executive — they can’t seem to shut up about what a hit Sweeney’s jeans ad was. Per The Hollywood Reporter, CMO Craig Brommers told Wall Street analysts that “Sydney Sweeney sells great jeans” on an earnings call Wednesday. The company’s stock reportedly shot up 25 percent on its earnings report, and Brommers claimed all of the Sweeney-affiliated products sold out within a week, some within a day. Brommers concluded, “The American Eagle Sydney Sweeney campaign was intended to be a brand and business reset, and it was.” Personally, I think we should be listening to Sweeney this time and leave all talk of her jeans and/or genes in the past.
