Lucas said the fire was being treated as suspicious. No specialist fire investigator was responding as of this morning.
A police spokesperson said police were making general inquiries, but were not actively investigating the fire.
“The house was vacant and no one else was involved, and the property has been completely destroyed.”
The fire comes less than a week after a house fire on SH38 between Frasertown and Wairoa was deemed suspicious.
The road was briefly closed as firefighters fought the blaze, which “severely damaged” the house.
The police spokesperson said police were still investigating the earlier fire. There were no indications the two incidents were linked.
