About 1pm, the vehicle was seen on Clyde St in Hamilton East, nearly 100km away.
Painter said officers monitored the vehicle from a distance because of the manner of the driver’s behaviour, before attempting to deploy road spikes.
The driver allegedly evaded the spikes, drove on the wrong side of the road and manoeuvred dangerously around other vehicles.
Police gave pursuit after the driver collided with another motorist’s vehicle on Fairfield Rd.
No one was injured.
The driver later stopped on Carey St and allegedly entered a nearby address, where police established a cordon.
After about an hour of negotiations, the driver came out and was arrested.
The vehicle was impounded.
A 40-year-old man is due to appear in Hamilton District Court tomorrow charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, failing to stop or ascertain injury following a crash, and other related offences.
Police said inquiries were continuing, but they were not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.
