A naked man allegedly attempted to drown a police dog in a swamp during an incident in Auckland overnight.

Just before 5pm, police received reports of a naked man, allegedly carrying a crowbar, making his way into the back of a Pt Chevalier property.

senior sergeant Guy Baldwin said officers, including a dog unit, arrived quickly at the scene on Great North Rd.

The 38-year-old man was found in a nearby swamp and after he resisted officers, the police dog was released.

“The man has then proceeded to assault and attempt to drown the dog before officers stepped in to prevent any further harm to the dog.
