It was the kind of calm that slowed me down, and one I couldn’t quite find in the rush of life back home – that was the real luxury.
Location:
Perched on the edge of Willingdon Island, the Taj Malabar Resort & Spa looks out across Ernakulam Harbour, where ferries, fishing boats and cargo ships move steadily through the water.
Its position beside a working shipping channel means the occasional passing vessel can bring a faint diesel smell when you’re out on the waterfront, and seabirds are sometimes enthusiastic visitors.
The setting feels private and removed, with little to explore immediately beyond the property itself. Fort Kochi’s Princess St is about a 20-minute drive away, roughly 11km from the hotel, while Jew Town in Mattancherry is just over 7km away.

Perfect For:
Couples seeking a nostalgic, romantic stay – particularly older couples, who made up much of the crowd during my stay. Those drawn to heritage hotels will appreciate the old-world, colonial-style charm.
First Impressions:
The taxi door was opened before I had the chance to reach for it. I stepped out and instinctively grabbed for my bag, only to be met with mild panic from the doorman, who clearly wasn’t expecting me to carry it myself.
Inside, cool air conditioning replaced the humidity, and a calm, polished atmosphere despite the late hour. Even close to midnight, staff were ready and waiting, insisting I take a seat and relax while they handled check-in.

A short form later, I was being guided upstairs. On the way, I was asked -more than once – if I needed dinner, just in case I’d changed my mind.
I was given a moment to take in my spacious room. Once I’d looked around, I was asked if everything was to my satisfaction, before being left to unwind.
The Room:
I stayed in one of the heritage rooms: spacious, softly lit and steeped in old-world charm. Dark wood furnishings and Victorian-style details gave it a calm, almost time-warped feel, like stepping back into the 1930s, but without sacrificing comfort.

It had a well-stocked minibar, tea and coffee-making facilities, an electronic safe, and a TV setup – with daily housekeeping and turndown service keeping things in order. An iron and ironing board were available on request.
The bathroom was more modern, with a marble finish that added a sense of luxury. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash were provided in the shower. Essentials like a toothbrush and toothpaste were also available, along with a hairdryer, robe and slippers.
The only downside was the view. Mine looked out over a driveway, boxed in but softened by greenery. It didn’t quite match the rest of the experience — if views matter, it’s worth requesting a higher floor or a room facing the harbour.

Facilities:
Wellness is a clear focus, centred around the J Wellness Circle spa, which offers a range of treatments rooted in traditional Indian therapies from full-body massages to Ayurvedic-inspired rituals designed to relax, detox and restore. There’s a spa and a 24-hour fitness centre equipped with cardio and weights.
I joined a 7am yoga session led by a knowledgeable and experienced hatha yoga teacher – an amazing way to start the day. My small group of six overlooked the pool as we settled into a calm, steady rhythm of breath.
Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout.
Food and Drink:
My only on-site dining experience was breakfast at Pepper, the hotel’s all-day restaurant.
The buffet had fresh fruit, pastries, cereals, juices and eggs made to order – with a mix of Indian options that made it easy to try something new. Buffet breakfasts were available daily from 7am to 10am for a fee – unless you booked otherwise.

My standout was the filter coffee. Keralam grows a lot of its own beans, and it shows in the taste.
Restaurants like Rice Boat, known for its Keralan seafood, Dolphin’s Point, set out over the water, and the Mattancherry Bar are also on site, while 24-hour room service makes it easy to stay in when the room is hard to leave.
The Best Bit:
Sitting out on the harbourfront terrace watching boats pass and the sun rise and set.
Room for Improvement:
I would have liked more proactive communication around the activities available on-site.

Sustainability:
The Taj Malabar Resort & Spa in Kochi has a clear focus on sustainability, with refillable glass water bottles, biodegradable amenities and energy-efficient systems used throughout to reduce its environmental impact. It also takes part in initiatives such as Earth Hour, switching off non-essential lights.
That approach extends beyond the hotel. Kochi has built a reputation for responsible tourism, with a focus on slower ways to explore, from walking tours to cycling and kayaking. Kumbalangi, India’s first model ecotourism village, was created to show how tourism can support traditional livelihoods while protecting the backwater ecosystem.
Even the journey reflects that mindset as Cochin International Airport is the world’s first fully solar-powered airport.
Accessibility:
The hotel was well set up for guests with disabilities, with wheelchair-accessible rooms that include lower-height beds, accessible bathrooms with grab bars, and shower chairs. The resort had lifts, accessible parking, and step-free access to shared spaces including the pool, spa and meeting rooms.
Price:
The standard rate for a heritage room with a king bed in late February was about $494.05 per night.
