– A beach home at 90 Otarawairere Road is expected to break Ōhope house price records.

– The three-bedroom home features luxury amenities like Italian tiles and an Otago schist wall.

– The property, listed in the $5ms, has attracted interest from expats returning to New Zealand.

A beach home built with the “best of everything” is likely to smash Ōhope house price records.

Ray White listing agent Tony Bonne told OneRoof that 90 Otarawairere Road was the best property he had ever marketed and one of the best properties in Whakatane.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom home boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, high studs, Italian tiles, a floating staircase, an Otago schist wall, and a lift.

“It’s going to suit somebody who wants nothing but the best,” Bonne said. “It’s really exclusive.”

The property only hit the market on Monday and has already drawn interest from expats looking to return to New Zealand.

The vendors bought the 1548sqm section overlooking New Zealand’s best beach in 2018 for $1.5m. They bowled the existing home and replaced it with an “architecturally designed masterpiece”, Bonne said.

However, the vendors are selling up to be closer to family.

Bonne said the property was in the Otarawairere Village development.

“People who live up there like the exclusivity. It just doesn’t have the crowds. It suits someone who doesn’t want to have 7000 to 8000 vehicles going past their door each day.”

The village is a 10-minute walk to Otarawairere Bay and a six-minute drive to Ōhope Beach. It was originally built in the 1960s to house the American executives in charge of building the Tasman Pulp and Paper Mill. Over the years, it has been subdivided and developed.

90 Otarawairere Road is being marketed as price on application, but Bonne said they were telling people it was “in the $5ms”. The current sale price record for Ōhope is $4.65m, set in January 2022 by a modern beachfront home on Plantation Reserve.

“If this sells, it will be Ōhope’s most expensive house. Everything in it is the best you could buy,” he said.
