Updates story re reopening of SH1

One person has died after two trucks collided on State Highway 1 in north Canterbury.
Emergency services were called to Parnassus Road, near McPhersons Stream Bridge, between Cheviot and Spotswood, about 8.30am on Monday.
Firefighters freed the trapped driver of one of the trucks, which was engulfed in flames after the crash.
St John said it sent two helicopters to the scene, and flew one critically injured patient to hospital.
“Sadly, despite best efforts, one person died in hospital,” police said.
SH1 remained closed between the intersections of Downs and Factory Roads for about 11 hours, with diversions in place.
Police said the Serious Crash Unit and Commercial Vehicle Safety Team attended and conducted scene examinations.
As at 7.50pm, the NZ Transport Agency’s website said SH1 had re-opened under a 50km/h temporary speed limit.
“Expect delays as congestion eases through the area,” the NZTA Journey Planner said.
