At the teen’s brief court appearance, he was granted name suppression.
The Crown did not oppose his bail, and he was remanded to reappear in the High Court at Hamilton later this month.
NZME understands it is alleged the accused, who was supported in court by whānau, was speeding at the time of the crash.
Police previously said that a BMW was allegedly speeding on Arapuni Rd about 8.40pm, and officers turned to stop the vehicle.
Moments later, the crash occurred.
Four occupants in the defendant’s vehicle were also injured.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority was notified at the time of the crash, as was standard procedure.
