Police confirmed the man came off a bridge on SH8 into Tekapo River in the Mackenzie township.

A spokesperson with Coastguard’s National Operations Centre told the Herald Coastguard Mackenzie Lakes was called to assist police around 8pm.
“A local Coastguard volunteer with his own private vessel, alongside a Police officer, commenced an initial search ahead of the arrival of four Coastguard Mackenzie Lakes volunteers, who travelled from their base in Twizel with their rescue vessel.”
Volunteer teams searched under the lights of a supporting rescue helicopter until around 11:15pm.
“Our thoughts are with the family of the missing man.”
The search was expected to resume this morning.
