“We wouldn’t be going for it if we didn’t think it was winnable,” Wong said.
Opportunity reached 3.2% in the Taxpayers’ Union Curia poll for June, and 3% for the April 1News Verian poll.
Wong previously told Newstalk ZB that Opportunity would focus its campaign on getting above a 5% party vote, but now she has decided to change tack.
“We had to think really carefully about it because obviously, as a small party with limited resources, we didn’t want to distract from the nationwide campaign. We needed to make sure that if they were going to go for an electorate, we could really do it justice,” Wong said.

He lost to National Party MP Hamish Campbell by more than 8000 votes, and the party failed to make it to Parliament on 2.2% of the party vote.
Wong said the difference between now and 2023 is the last campaign was all about winning the Ilam electorate.
“This time we are going for both, Mt Albert and trying to get over that party vote threshold.
“I think it would be mutually reinforcing actually because people really do see that we have a shot at winning Mt Albert,” she said.
