She said the upgraded facilities would remain a key space for members, while also increasing the venue’s function appeal.
The project received formal approval from members at a meeting on Thursday evening, clearing the way for fundraising efforts to begin.
Dyke said the redevelopment would be entirely member-funded, and the club was planning a fundraising gala on June 26 to help raise money.
“We’re lucky we’ve got the members behind us … we’ve got everything ready, so now we’ve just got to do some fundraising.”
She said work could start within months and take six to eight months to complete, but setbacks were possible.
“You never do know when you take the roof off something existing.”
The Mount Ocean Sports Club released the first look of its planned $2m redevelopment.
The club was expected to remain open for most of the construction period, although Dyke said it may need to close for one to two weeks while strengthening work was completed.
“It is imperative that we keep trading as much as we can.”
She said the club had been noticeably quieter since the landslide, but she was confident the upgraded venue would help bring people back to Pilot Bay and the wider Mount area.
“As well as being a great place for members and locals to come, it’ll be an exceptional wedding and conference venue… that’ll help bring more people back to the Mount and possibly help the accommodation people as well.”
Mount Mainstreet business improvement manager Jay Banner said the club had been an important part of Mount Maunganui’s identity for many years.
“The proposed redevelopment is an exciting investment in the future of both the club and the wider Mount community.”
Banner said the club was a key destination on Pilot Bay, and strengthening one of the area’s most iconic community assets would create benefits beyond the club itself.
“More activity around the club creates more reasons for people to spend time at the beach, walk through Mainstreet, visit local businesses and enjoy everything the Mount has to offer.”
He said the project demonstrated confidence in the future of Mount Maunganui.
“Community facilities play a vital role in bringing people together, and the redevelopment of the Mount Ocean Sports Club represents an investment in community wellbeing, recreation and connection.

Bay of Plenty MP Tom Rutherford said the redevelopment was a welcome upgrade for the venue that held an important place in the community.
“The Mount Ocean Sports Club is a real jewel in our crown of Mount Maunganui and really well loved by so many members, not just of Mount Maunganui but of Tauranga.”
He said he had seen the plans and praised the club members and the committee for bringing the project together.
“This upgrade is well-needed and I’m really excited about it.”
Rutherford, who is a club member, said the venue was about more than sport and socialising.
“My wife and I are members of the sports club and we love going there. It’s a great social environment and, to the club’s credit, they do amazing work for our community.”
He pointed to recent fundraising events held at the club, including a Breast Cancer Foundation high tea and another that raised $50,000 for Waipuna Hospice.

Tauranga City Council general manager of operations and infrastructure Reneke van Soest said a building consent for the redevelopment was issued on November 21, 2025.
The council approved the temporary occupation of a small section of the Pilot Bay reserve in front of the building for construction-related activities between June and December 2026.
This will allow for scaffolding, a gantry over the footpath and the temporary use of two car parks for skip storage.
Van Soest said public access to both the reserve and parking area would be maintained throughout construction.
