Paul Laspagis is set to showcase more than five decades of artistic inquiry in a new exhibition opening later this month, bringing together landscape works inspired by Melbourne’s outer east.
‘Transfigurations of Landscape and Figure’, opening on 28 June and running until early August, features a selection of paintings created over the past eight years, drawn from the natural environment surrounding Ferntree Gully, where the artist lives and works.
Born in Greece and raised in Melbourne, Laspagis has devoted much of his career to exploring the relationship between observation and artistic expression through painting and drawing.
The exhibition reflects his long-standing interest in interpreting the visual world and transforming lived experience into what he describes as a “pictorial language”.
Laspagis studied painting and drawing at the former National Gallery Art School between 1968 and 1971 under acclaimed Australian artist Paul Brack.
He later taught drawing at Prahran Art School, the Victorian College of the Arts and through adult education programs.His work has been exhibited widely in commercial and public galleries, including recent exhibitions at the Victorian Artists Society.
Paintings by Laspagis are held in major public collections such as the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the National Gallery of Athens and the Heide Museum of Modern Art, as well as regional galleries and university collections across Victoria.
