Tamil film Karuppu is still running in cinemas, although it has pretty much exhausted its run. The film was released digitally last week, which generally marks the end of the theatrical run for South Indian films. The film has collected Rs. 1.75 crore approx in four days of the fifth week so far, for a total of Rs. 226 crore approx. It is projected to end its run at Rs. 227 crore.
Internationally, the film has grossed nearly USD 8.50 million / Rs. 81 crore, giving it a worldwide box office gross of Rs. 307 crore approx, projected to close at Rs. 308 crore. The Suriya starrer ranks as the ninth highest-grossing Kollywood film of all time in India, while worldwide it comes in at the tenth place.
The home state, Tamil Nadu, is closing in on Rs. 154 crore, the seventh-highest of all time. At one point, it seemed like it could go for Rs. 170 crore or more, but there was a drop in the second week weekdays, which ultimately kept the film short. Karuppu fared strongly outside Tamil Nadu as well, particularly in APTS, where the Telugu dubbed version brought in nearly Rs. 35 crore.
Karuppu has ended the drought for Suriya, and the timing could not be better for the Tamil film industry. Vijay has stepped away from cinema to pursue politics. Rajinikanth is old, and Ajith isn’t too prolific either, with interest in a racing career. In such times, the rebound of Suriya is a godsend as the Tamil film industry is in dire need of stars to headline bigger films.
