Sir, – There was a time when the soundtrack of an Irish summer’s day was birdsong and the quiet murmur of leaves stirred by a gentle breeze. Increasingly, it has been joined – and at times overtaken – by the incessant droning of the domestic power washer.
While there is no doubt that many take pride in maintaining their homes and surroundings, the growing use of such equipment at weekends and in residential areas does raise questions around noise levels and timing. What might feel like a brief household task can have a wider impact on the surrounding peace of a neighbourhood.
Noise pollution guidelines were developed in a different era, when domestic machinery was generally less powerful and less frequent in use. It may be timely to consider whether current guidance adequately reflects the realities of modern equipment used in residential settings.
This is not a call to discourage cleanliness or home maintenance, but rather a suggestion that a balance be found between such activities and the shared enjoyment of quiet in our communities. – Yours, etc,
