The wish versus the strategy
An ageing parent declares they want to stay home and the family agrees immediately because saying no feels heartless. What nobody discusses is what they’ve just volunteered for.
Then gradually things change. A fall, a health scare, driving stops, cooking becomes difficult and the parent who was doing fine is now asking for help showering. The family realises, too late, that they agreed to a destination without discussing the journey.

The conversation you actually need isn’t about whether mum stays home. It’s about what home looks like as needs increase. What if she needs help showering? What if she falls regularly? What if you can no longer physically manage? These are planning questions and answering them while everyone is calm beats answering them in a hospital corridor.

The home costs money, and so does the support
Falls are one of the leading causes of injury and hospitalisation among older adults and around 70% happen indoors. Loose rugs, poor lighting, slippery bathrooms and awkward kitchen layouts become serious risks as mobility changes — often going unnoticed because they’ve been part of daily life for years.
A comprehensive home safety audit by an occupational therapist identifies what requires attention now and what to plan for. I have spent more time than I care to estimate pricing up home modifications to help families understand the real cost of staying put versus downsizing versus entering a retirement village. The numbers are rarely what people expect and understanding them while you are still in the driver’s seat is far better than discovering them under pressure.
Staying at home also carries hidden expenses most families don’t anticipate: specialist trips, privately hired support workers and hours of unpaid care absorbed by family members who’ve reduced their working hours without anyone acknowledging it, let alone compensating them for it.
Funded support is available, but harder to access than most expect. The pathway usually starts with a referral through your GP, followed by a Needs Assessment Service Coordination (NASC) assessment, which acts as the gateway to publicly funded support. How quickly you get seen varies by region; in some areas the wait is months, not days.
“A detailed referral that identifies clinical risks and links them to specific funding options tends to get dealt with promptly,” Young says. A vague referral can stall, citing “patient needs home help”, as a surprisingly common, yet unhelpful instruction on a referral.
This is likely why a geriatrician’s referral moves faster than most: they specialise in identifying clinical risk and know exactly which funding options apply. Many families, if they understood this, would happily pay for a private geriatrician consultation to fast-track what can otherwise be a drawn-out and frustrating process.
If you qualify, the assessment can be a genuine game changer.
But most people don’t anticipate waiting months for an assessment, then waiting weeks more for the cavalry to arrive, usually late and carrying the bare necessities rather than a complete solution.
The system does its best, but it is families who make up the difference.

The invisible carer problem
Many adult children and spouses gradually become carers without consciously deciding to. First it’s helping with shopping, then appointments, then medication management. Because the transition is gradual, caregivers often don’t recognise their own burnout until they reach crisis point.
The warning signs are worth knowing: constant fatigue, poor sleep, physical aches, financial pressure and growing resentment. Family members routinely lift and transfer loved ones without any training, putting themselves at real risk of injury.
What makes caregiver burnout particularly dangerous is the guilt. Many carers recognise they’re struggling long before they ask for help but convince themselves they should be able to cope a little longer.
If the caregiver breaks down, the entire arrangement can collapse.
Respite care is supposed to be the relief valve. In practice, qualifying and accessing are two different things.
Yvonne*, a registered nurse caring for her husband fulltime, described herself as “almost at breaking point, and at my wits end”. Her husband qualified for respite care through his NASC assessment. She then waited 18 months for a respite bed, and when one became available, she could use it for three days.
Respite care is worth pursuing, but don’t build your plan around it as something you can reliably count on. Distribute the caregiving load honestly across the family, and do it before resentment does it for you.
Start the conversation before you have to
The families who navigate this best start early. They name the hard things, sort enduring powers of attorney and advance care directives, and ask what mum actually wants — not just “to stay home” but what that looks like when needs become significant. They build a Plan B before they need one.
Take your parent’s wishes seriously enough to build a real strategy around them. Understand the funding system before you need it. Have the family meeting before resentment calls it for you.
The goal isn’t to remain in the family home at all costs. It’s to remain safe, connected and independent for as long as possible. That can be a genuinely positive experience for everyone involved — but only with planning.
The families who succeed aren’t the ones with the most resources. They’re the ones who start early, stay honest, and understand that caring for the caregiver matters just as much as caring for mum or dad.
Because staying at home isn’t a destination. It’s a strategy.
And the earlier you build it, the longer it tends to work.
Six ways to improve your parent’s chances of staying at home
1. Start planning early. Don’t wait for a fall, hospital stay or crisis to start the conversation.
2. Expect delays. Funded support can take time to access and rarely solves every problem.
3. Get assessed before you need help. A geriatrician can identify health risks early and their referrals are often more detailed, helping families access support faster. A home safety assessment can identify hazards before they cause a fall.
4. Build a care fund. A cleaner, gardener, meal service or a few hours of care each week can make a huge difference. Plan how you’ll pay for it.
5. Protect the caregiver. If the person providing most of the support burns out, the whole plan can unravel.
6. Don’t assume staying at home is cheaper. Investing in support and prevention can cost less than a hospital admission that leads to permanent rest-home care.
