Auckland, Northland’s 50 best new, renovated, heritage buildings named: NZ Institute of Architects’ awards

Last month, the NZ Super Fund moved in to occupy the entire block, owned by Cooper and Company.

Studio Pacific Architecture won a commercial award for the new Air New Zealand Hangar 4 at Auckland Airport.

The institute described the building as the largest single-span timber arch aircraft hangar in the Southern Hemisphere.

Warren and Mahoney won an interior award for the new $300m Te Paeroa o Te Kawau Beca House on the waterfront.

Precinct Properties developed that block whose name means the shoreline of the kawau.

Heritage winners

Seven entries won heritage awards.

That was the most in this category since 2008 and represented the strength and renewed focus on preserving older buildings in Auckland’s ongoing redevelopment, the institute said.

Hospitality winners

Awards in this category only went to new buildings at the $50m Te Arai golf course north of Auckland, developed by American billionaire Ric Kayne.

A number of entries came from Northland, the institute said.

One went to Whangārei for public architecture in the new bus station on Rose St.

Jury convenor and architect Rachael Rush of Klein Architects said the entries showed the transformative impact architecture could have on people’s lives.

Architects shape cities, support investment and create communities, she said.
