If you thought you’d already seen all of the BBC’s best crime dramas, we’re here to add another to your list. Enter What Remains, the 5-star series in which our lead detective, DI Len Harper (David Threlfall), has a particularly disturbing case on his hands when a woman’s body is discovered having gone unnoticed for two years. Think Shetland meets The Killing and you get the gist.

It’s the sort of series that hooks you from the very start, with Melissa Young’s remains found in the attic of a tenement house in Coulthard Street. The question is, how did none of the other occupants make the discovery sooner – and is one of them responsible? It’s up to the determined DI Harper to find out.

The four-part series, which first aired on BBC One in 2013, introduces us to DI Len Harper (David Threlfall), a long-serving police officer who’s about to retire. When Melissa Young’s body is discovered just a week before his final day, however, he finds it difficult to let the case go.

Melissa’s body has been discovered in a South London block of flats and yet it’s been left to gather dust for two years, with none of the other occupants having realised she’d disappeared. When DI Harper’s colleagues write off the case as a suicide, he’s not satisfied and so begins his mission to find out who did it – and whether it was one of the neighbours themselves.

Over the course of four episodes, we meet the eclectic residents of 8 Coulthard Street. In one flat lives pregnant Vidya Khan (Amber Rose Revah) and her boyfriend, Michael Jenson (Russell Tovey), who can barely look after himself, let alone a child. With time to spare, Vidya becomes a full-time sleuth, helping DI Harper investigate her neighbours.

Next up are Elaine Markham (Indira Varma) and Peggy Scott (Victoria Hamilton), lovers who run a business together, but their relationship dynamic is somewhat concerning. Elsewhere, we meet Kieron Moss (Steven Mackintosh), a journalist with hidden demons and a strained relationship with his 17-year-old troubled son, Adam Moss (Alexander Arnold). His partner, Patricia (Claudie Blakley), is a fellow journalist, and soon starts to uncover her partner’s dark past.

Finally, there’s 60-year-old loner Joe Sellers (David Bamber) and Liz Fletcher (Denise Gough), a recluse whose behaviour grows dangerously out of control. With a rather large pool of potential suspects, DI Harper certainly has his hands full trying to work out who was responsible for Melissa Young’s death – and why they did it.

David Threlfall told the BBC why he was drawn to the character of DI Len Harper. “He’s very quiet. He’s a good man,” he said. “A quietly moral man is what I would say, someone who has an empathy with the way we live, particularly in a metropolitan borough, the way that we do or don’t look after each other, pay attention to each other or even care about each other, in an urban setting.”
