Netflix announced this morning that the fifth and final season of its breakout adventure drama will premiere August 20th, releasing a new teaser trailer and first look photos that frame the final chapter as a revenge mission. After four seasons of treasure hunts, betrayals, near death escapes and class war chaos on Kildare Island, the series is now heading into its endgame.

The teaser picks up after the emotional Season 4 finale, which left the core friend group shattered by the death of JJ, played by Rudy Pankow. Netflix’s new preview makes clear that grief will be the engine of the final season, with Kiara, played by Madison Bailey, and the rest of the Pogues looking to settle the score with Chandler Groff, the villain played by J. Anthony Crane.
Returning cast members highlighted in the new materials include Chase Stokes as John B, Madelyn Cline as Sarah Cameron, Bailey as Kiara, Jonathan Daviss as Pope, Carlacia Grant as Cleo and Drew Starkey as Rafe. The new images suggest the season will move between jailbreak energy, international clues and the kind of scrappy, high stakes set pieces that helped turn Outer Banks into one of Netflix’s most recognizable young adult franchises.
Created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke, Outer Banks premiered in 2020 and quickly found an audience with its mix of teen melodrama, coastal mystery, romance and pulpy treasure hunt plotting. The show has pushed the Pogues from one impossible situation into another, turning friendship into the show’s main currency and danger into its default setting.
Season 5 finds the Pogues still reeling from JJ’s death in Morocco, with Groff still at large and the group facing pressure from multiple sides. Dalia, played by Pollyanna McIntosh, and the Corsairs remain part of the threat landscape, while the Kooks continue to make home feel less like a safe harbor than another battleground. Netflix is also teasing an uneasy alliance with Rafe, a character whose shifting loyalties have long made him one of the show’s most volatile pieces.
The show’s last chapter will have to answer a few major questions. How far will Kiara and the Pogues go to avenge JJ? Can Rafe become a true ally, or is he still too dangerous to trust? And can the group finally claim the freedom they have been chasing since John B first pulled his friends into a mystery bigger than any of them understood?
Netflix is not giving away the full shape of the ending yet, but the first look suggests the series is staying true to its formula: big emotions, bigger risks and a group of friends trying to outrun a world that keeps closing in on them.
