Confirmation of his injuries comes on the eve of Dave Rennie’s first All Blacks squad, for July’s Nations Championship tests, which is due to be announced on Monday.
Fainga’anuku was a vital component in the Crusaders’ campaign this year, with a surprise move into the forwards in round 11 seeing the 26-year-old become one of the most intriguing storylines of the year.
Returning to the Crusaders in 2026 after a stint overseas, it was expected Fainga’anuku would feature in the midfield or on the wing in Rob Penney’s team.
Penney noted they viewed Fainga’anuku as a hybrid early in the season and, after he finished a couple of games in the back row, he was moved into openside flanker permanently.
In 15 appearances for the Crusaders this year, Fainga’anuku made six starts in the No 7 jersey, five at centre, three on the bench and just one on the wing.
While debate will continue over how new All Blacks coach Dave Rennie may look to use the dynamic Fainga’anuku at test level, there will be plenty of interest when the squad is named on Monday.
Fainga’anuku is the latest All Black to be ruled out of the series due to injury, with All Blacks locks Scott Barrett (back) and Fabian Holland (shoulder) also set to miss the July window.
Fullback Will Jordan is also recovering from a calf injury, but is expected to be available for the third test, against Ireland at Eden Park on July 18.
