He made his NRL debut in 2020 with the Wests Tigers where he went on to make 42 appearances, scoring 13 tries, before joining the Penrith Panthers where he made 31 NSW Cup appearances.
The 26-year-old made the move to the Knights this season but is yet to make an NRL appearance for them, although he has been included on the extended bench on a couple of occasions.
He has previously played for the Junior Kiwis and Kiwis A teams.
The incident will now likely be reviewed by the match review committee, but charges from the reserve-grade competition aren’t usually handed out until Monday.
Knights NRL coach Justin Holbrook was asked about the incident after their win over the Dragons, and said he was aware of it, but didn’t want to comment.
It comes after a big fortnight in rugby league regarding sexuality, after former Warriors prop Kane Evans came out as gay in an emotional interview where he opened up about his battle with addiction and mental health regarding his sexuality.
Days later, there were rumours that Israel Folau was being targeted for a shock NRL return, however that move was blocked due to his history.
Folau had previously had his Rugby Australia contract torn up in 2019 after he posted on social media that “hell awaits” gay people, something he later told an audience at the Australian Christian Lobby he would do again.
Surprisingly, Folau did comment two love hearts on Evans’ most recent social media post after coming out as gay.
In 2022, New Zealand Warriors winger Marcelo Montoya was suspended for four NRL matches in for directing a homophobic slur at an opponent.
