And so we move to 8.49pm, Thursday, June 11, 2026 at Cafe India in Dingwall, Scotland. The lamb biryani arrives. The phone pings. The lamb biryani is wolfed. Kane Williamson is retiring.

The country’s World Test Championship-winning captain communicated the news in much the same fashion as he gathered runs: discreet but orderly.
“I just picked off a couple of the senior players and staff that have been around for most of the last 16 years [the day before the announcement], then I addressed the majority of the group [on the day] before walking into the press conference.
“It’s funny the different emotions that occur – and you don’t expect them because you feel good about the decision – but you reflect on the experiences you’ve been through.
“I see so much talent in this [Black Caps] group. There’s such a high ceiling and guys totally committed to taking this team to another level.
“That’s part of the reason why it’s now and not after one more or two more tests. I know the feeling that I have, and there needs to be a bit of space.”
The security surrounding Williamson’s departure was impressive once he decided to stride off beyond the boundary.
MacGyver would have struggled to pick the lock on this classified secret.
Few could quibble with the need-to-know basis, given the suspicion around crickileaks at the national governing body of late.
True to form, given the integrity of the man, no one broke ranks.
So why exit now?
Kane Williamson: “I’ve given my energy and commitment to this team”.
“I could hold on, I could take more games, I could put a name on a sheet – but the bigger picture for this team is far more important than someone doing that.
“I’ve given my energy and commitment to this team, and I’m so grateful for what it’s given me back. I look around the dressing room and I see that same sort of enthusiasm for the journey ahead.
“When I compare those two pictures, it felt right to make the call. It’s been an interesting few days … and a few emotions as you can imagine.”
Williamson leaves with 9515 test runs, the most of any New Zealander and presumably a new potential PIN number to challenge the Sir Richard Hadlee-inspired 0431 for Black Caps anoraks.
The 35-year-old has no qualms about leaving the statistical zenith of a 10,000 aggregate as a mirage in the distance. He’s satisfied regardless.
“[Representing New Zealand] has been a pursuit to follow and give all your attention to, spending the whole time trying to get yourself and the team better.
“That’s where my passion has been, and I’ve loved it being that way. That’s where I see a slight change in the seasons [of life] now.
“This team has meant so much to me, so in terms of whether that dream has been fulfilled, I would say ‘yes’. That’s not just reflecting on me and what I’ve done, but what I’ve been a part of with a great group committed to doing something together.”
Perhaps that is Williamson’s finest legacy: inadvertently encouraging us to examine relative achievement rather than gushing about arbitrary milestones. If there’s one lesson to teach a generation of fans, that’s an admirable one.
So what are the pivotal innings which provide context to his career beyond the sheer numbers?
Let’s limit the sample size to three, each for a different reason, lest this feature turn into a thesis.
To these eyes, all must come from tests. The clue is in the name, especially for one of the game’s enduring purists.
First, let’s look at a coming-of-age moment on March 27, 2012 in the third match against South Africa at Wellington’s Basin Reserve.
His unbeaten 102 ranks as one of New Zealand cricket’s more heroic moments, and has latterly spawned him a business in abdominal protection.
The hosts faced a formidable task on the final day, chasing 389 for victory against tourists who were already 1-0 up and poised to secure the series.
New Zealand were 32 for two in the 18th over of their second innings. Dale Steyn tore in as part of what must rank as one of the more lethal pace attacks this century, alongside Morne Morkel and Vern Philander in their pomp.
Steyn fired through a good-length delivery which cramped Williamson on the crease as he looked to defend. The ball beat the bat – and the sound of a loud crack followed by a groan, was ominous.
The then 21-year-old prodigy waddled towards the vacant short leg like he was auditioning for a role as Donald Duck. He crouched and clung to his bat for solace.
The speed ball radar aggravated the agony by conjuring up the figure “139km/h”.
Television commentator Mark Richardson added some helpful punditry to the replay for viewers at home: “Ooh, that’s flush”.
Steyn’s less helpful reaction was audible over the stump microphone: “I’m not going to apologise”.
To his credit, he had the grace to sign the fractured box in the aftermath.

Williamson went on to save the test, literally displaying testicular fortitude.
Second, came a masterclass at the same venue across February 26 and 27, 2023, this time in the second test against England.
His 132 anchored a recovery to set a target of 258 which eventually enabled New Zealand to become the fourth team in history to win after following-on … triumphing by a margin of one run.
On the periphery, certainly in Williamson’s mind, was the fact he became the country’s highest test run-scorer during the knock.
He moved past Ross Taylor to 7684 with a boundary through mid-wicket from the fourth delivery of the fourth day.
How did Williamson celebrate? He gardened the pitch, specifically removing some debris on a bouncer length from the Government House end.
Bringing his side back into the match was the aim, and had been achieved by stumps.
As he exited for lunch, his achievement was repeated to the crowd via the Tannoy. The inner-extrovert was finally coaxed from Williamson – he raised a right glove in the sort of curt fashion one might use to ensure a mate avoids dinging into a wall when parking in a tight space.
Finally, let’s settle on the humble 52 not out against India at Southampton’s Rose Bowl to secure the World Test Championship final on June 23, 2021.

The fact the captain was at the crease, as Taylor struck the winning runs, was symbolic. He had essentially steered the two-year Covid-ravaged campaign, including 918 runs at an average of 61.20 across 10 matches. The spoils were fitting.
The joyous embrace the pair shared, and the subsequent raising of the competition mace, encompasses the best New Zealand sport can offer.
Those three innings might also sum up Williamson best: courageous, rare and inspirational.
Irrespective, what fans think will be subjective. In what may serve as no surprise, Williamson’s abiding career memory does not involve batting.
“The thing I look back on, and probably the thing that took the most energy, was my time captaining the group and trying to drive the team forward.
“Along the way there are moments that have been special – and probably amazing for fans – but the journey is where we were at, getting better every day and evolving.
“When you’re in a leadership position it has challenges, but is also extremely satisfying to develop and grow.”
Williamson accepts the time has come to devote himself to a longer and more significant innings.
“I’ve got a young, growing family and without going into a million details, you start to realise there’s different feelings you have beyond a total commitment to cricket.
“The drive in professional sport can create quite a narrow space.”
He presented the caps before New Zealand’s second test against England at The Oval. Will we see him return to the game in some other capacity?
“I’ll let the dust settle. I’ve had a few experiences coaching recently [such as with Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League] and I enjoyed that, but let’s see.”
