Jim Smith has spent more than three decades studying one of the world’s most infamous environmental disasters: Chernobyl. His research has taken him deep into contaminated landscapes across Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia.
Originally trained as an astrophysicist at Scotland’s University of Edinburgh, Smith shifted his focus to environmental science as concerns about climate change and pollution began to grow in the late 1980s.
