“He was moaning and cursing a bit,” they said. “We moved him on to his side pretty quickly to keep his leg still, but he was in a lot of pain.”
A Harley-Davidson collided with an oncoming car on Clevedon-Kawakawa Rd on Sunda.
The passenger landed in a ditch on the other side of the road and suffered a cut and bruising to her lower left leg.
“It looks like she might have a broken ankle but was in pretty good spirits,” the eyewitness said.
The eyewitness was on the scene moments after the event and said he saw the pair rolling along the ground.
“Luckily they weren’t going too fast at the time. It looks like the bike slid as they went round a bend and, unfortunately, the car was coming the other way.”
Ambulance, police and fire crews were quickly on the scene and the road was closed. The motorcyclists were treated then transported for assessment at Middlemore Hospital.
The driver of the car and a passenger were assessed by ambulance crew but seemed to have escaped injury.
“They were pretty lucky, all things considered,” the eyewitness said.
Police said a two-vehicle crash was reported at about 10am and one person suffered serious injuries.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
