Fifteen people were evacuated from the Fantasyland Express train after it became stranded on a bridge when an axle broke.

A Hastings District Council spokesperson said the passengers were safely evacuated by being taken back through the train and off the rear carriage after the incident about 11am on Sunday.

“No one was injured, and everyone remained calm during the evacuation, which took about 15 minutes.

“Council will investigate the cause of the incident, and WorkSafe has been notified.”

Fire and Emergency NZ was called to the scene as a precaution.
