Domestic travel is forecast to be down 3.5% on last year, although the highest passenger numbers are still expected on the final day of the school term.
“While domestic travel is tracking slightly lighter than last year overall, the final day of the school term will stand out,” Tasker said.
On July 3, around 14,000 people will depart from Auckland’s domestic terminal – a 2.7% increase from last year’s busiest day – while more than 13,000 travellers are expected to arrive, up 3% on the 2025 winter break.
Christchurch, Wellington and Queenstown will be top spots for domestic travellers across both departures and arrivals.
While the busiest days will fall at either end of the school holidays, weekend demand is expected to be steady over the break, with 30,000 travellers arriving across all three of the weekends.
“It makes our forward planning especially important, with strong, steady demand across the holiday period, not just on one or two especially busy days,” Tasker said.
He advised travellers to ensure they have allowed enough time to get through security and to their gate.
“Get prepared for your travels by checking your airline’s check-in zone up to 24 hours before departure on the Auckland Airport website.
“Pack spare batteries and ear buds in your carry on due to the fire risk they pose in the cargo hold and check the Aviation Security rules online for powders, liquids, aerosols and gels for international travel.”
An additional check in area in Zone T of the Transport Hub will also be open at peak times of day to manage the increased passenger numbers.
