Nimona

An unlikely duo takes on the world

Nimona is a sci-fi action thriller based on ND Stevenson’s graphic novel. Set in a medieval-futuristic kingdom, Nimona follows Ballister Boldheart, a commoner-turned-knight, who is on the run from the army and his boyfriend, a fellow knight, after he is framed for murder. He meets Nimona, a shape-shifting outcast who insists on being his sidekick.

The two attempt to clear Ballister’s name and find the real culprit, while Nimona’s identity crisis creates obstacles with dire consequences. Nimona features voice acting from Chloë Grace Moretz (The Amityville Horror), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), and Eugene Lee Yang (The Try Guys).

Nimona is a wonderful mix of love, adventure, unique animation, and screenplay. It was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards and won two Annie Awards: Outstanding Achievement for Writing in a Feature Production and Outstanding Achievement for Voice Acting in a Feature Production.

Don’t Look Up

It’s not like it’s the end of the world

Quirky, hilarious, and chaotic perfectly describe one of the most entertaining films of this decade, Don’t Look Up. The film follows astronomy professor Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and graduate student Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) after they discover a massive comet that is set to collide with Earth in just over six months. But the problem that’s actually ruining everything: nobody heeds their warnings. The situation spirals into further chaos when politicians, news channels, billionaires, and even social media personalities turn the impending doom event into a political and cultural spectacle.

Don’t Look Up is led by an all-star cast, including DiCaprio, Lawrence, Meryl Streep, and Cate Blanchett. It received four Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture) and four Golden Globe Award nominations (including Best Picture – Musical or Comedy). It was also named by the American Film Institute Awards in its Top 10 Films list of 2022.

Knives Out: Glass Onion

Peel back the layers for the big reveal

One of my favorite movie series on Netflix right now is the Knives Out series. The second film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, packs both laughs and a good mystery. The film brings back detective Benoit Blanc, who finds himself invited to a luxurious private island owned by an eccentric tech billionaire, Miles Bron (Edward Norton), and his circle of friends.

When the party reaches the island, they stay at his mansion, powered by an alternative fuel, and participate in Miles’ murder mystery game amid a grand show of his wealth and technology. But soon, things start going awry, turning the fake murder game night into a night of real investigation. Slowly, old secrets start surfacing, and the guests begin turning on one another.

Twists and turns follow as Blanc tries to peel back Bron’s layers, with the real reason for his presence on the island also being slowly revealed. Even if you’ve never seen Knives Out, this standalone sequel is an easy recommendation for anyone who enjoys smart mysteries with a modern twist. Glass Onion received a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination at the 95th Academy Awards. It also won two Critics’ Choice Movie Awards: Best Comedy, Best Acting Ensemble.
