A pedestrian has died after being hit by a vehicle on a Waikato state highway this morning.

The crash on State Highway 39/Kakaramea Rd, south of Whatawhata, was reported around 6.40am.

Police said the pedestrian died at the scene. SH39 remains closed between Koromatua Rd and Higgison Rd.

Cordons
are in place, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
